THE CODES OF CONDUCT

To my humble knowledge, practitioners in every reknown profession in Nigeria, the foremost being Nigerian Sociey of Engineers (NSE), Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) have  'sacred' principles of operation or Codes of Conduct which may be termed as The Rules of Engagement but generally called PROFESSIONAL ETHICS.

The components of these ethics circumference around equity and justice, people's welfare and public safety, love and care, expertise and diligence, service and selflessness etc of all positive values.

Bribery and theft, dishonesty and injustice, wickedness and selfishness etc of all negative values are found no where in the script lines of the ETHICS.

For example, the following are summarized Engineering Ethics:
1.Hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public
2. Perform services only in areas of their competence
3. Issue public statements only in objective and truthful manner
4. Act for employers as faithful agents and trustees
5. Avoid deceptive acts.
6. Good conduct that enhances professional reputation

So the doctors, lawyers, accountants and others have theirs to which they swear to uphold.

Similarly, all of us, on schools' assemblies and at any official gathering or event across the country on daily basis, we recite the National Anthems and Pledge. The first stanza of the Anthem is Sensitization -a call for action or a spur into service:  'Arise o compatriots...' (Who are they?)...to serve our father's land with love, strength and faith (Where are they?)...one nation bound in freedom, peace and unity (Nigeria?!).

This stanza does not address Nigerians or Nigeria of the moment, may be of the past. Kudos to the good heart that conceived and composed it. Bravo to the heart that approved the script. The lines gave us a sight into their heart. It was a clean, clear, sincere and united one.

As for the second, it is a prayer: 'O God of Creation..., direct our noble cause (what does God direct if the cause is not noble?)...guide our leaders right (leaders seen as national or that regarded as regional)...to build the nation where peace and justice shall reign (that nation is still yet unbuilt. No foundation in sight. The plan may just now being set)'.

These prayers may be coming from impure hearts and uttered from insincere tongues. I do not see a country where people swear on falsehood like ours.

All our  professionals presented themselves for interviews before senior professionals and wrote some qualifying examinations before they were certified. At the induction, they also sworn oaths to fulfil these ETHICS in their practise and daily lives.

Examination malpractice has almost become an everyday life affair among Nigerians at all levels.

Same can be said of the ministers, governors and leaders across all ranks and files. They made covenant to civility and swear to an oaths.

Where are they failing and falling in fulfilling the oaths of ethics. Why are the custodians of the laws now being pursued by laws?

The hunter has become hunted because ascension to professional or whichever cadres in the first place (for most people) was based on cheats, bribery, forgery and impersonation.

If you are not a professional but you are a man and a Nigerian. How do you retract the progress of this nation from its root? Analysis of the two stanzas reveals the values that are most critical to Nigerian foremost men and to the survival of this country.

The word 'LOVE' and 'PEACE' appears in both stanzas; 'JUSTICE' appears twice in the second; 'UNITY, STRENGHT and FAITH' appears in the first while HONESTY appears in the second.

Where are you and I in all these values? THE CHANGE BEGINS WITH YOU and I.

One of our errors is that we do not regard ourselves leaders before we are one. Behold! you and I are leaders. Everyone is a leader. A leader is he who has a trust to fulfill, a responsibility to discharge and an account to give. Hence, servant or slave is a leader. As a president or an emperor,  if you tower above everyone on earth and responsible to no mortal, you are to YOUR MAKER. The messenger of Allah said: 'everyone of you is a shepherd or guidance and shall be questioned about his flocks. A man is a shepherd upon his household and shall be questioned about his subjects. A woman is a shepherd (or guardian) upon the house of her husband and shall be duly questioned about her flock. A SERVANT is a guardian over the wealth of his master and shall be questioned about his subject. Everyone of you is a guardian and shall be asked about his subject (sahih)'. The status of a servant is not different from his master. Both are accountable to a superior authority.

Ultimately, that authority is God before whom both the masters and slaves are servants and the poor and the rich, the powerful and weak and the judges and judged shall be made to stand trials.

As a Nigerian, reflect on the content of the anthems and pledges..we all recite and thereafter end with 'so help me God'.

God's help comes with sincerity and worthy actions. Beware of fake pledges. God does not help a people who are insincere with their pledges and after that, beseech Him for help.

If we are self fighters by principles and faith, Nigerians do not need corruption fighters let alone fear their fate in the hands of the corrupt law lords and so-called custodians of justice.

Disregard for ethics among Nigerian professionals is an recipe of corruption. If that infects the judiciary, no home let alone a nation; and no life not talk of right or freedom. With that, fair election would be inconclusive, brigands would occupy leadership, trials of theft would be uncessarily be protracted, true voices would be silenced, innocent people would be sent behind bars etc.

Three people have the destiny of a people or nation in their hands. They have serious issues with giving accounts to God on the Day of Judgement: Leader, Learned(scholars, intellectuals, professionals etc) and Jurist (law givers or judiciary-judges and lawyers).

Unpalatable news: you and I belong to one or more of this tripod. Each of these titles can be interplayed such that we say a leader or learned issues an order and then become judges. The learned and judges rule to give direction on matters. Then, they serve as leaders. And every man is a leader in his own capacity. No one is therefore exempted.

FACTS, FAITH and FAIRNESS remain the tripodal codes of conduct for the tripods

God bless us, our leaders and our nation.

THE HISTORY OF BIRTHDAY

There was a statement that if you want to hide anything for the contemporary Muslims, put it in a book. I cannot agree less. Ours is a generation who chooses comfort and pastimes above reading. Despite the plethora of information online and offline in our time, we are in no way chips from the old blocks compared with the early Muslims. They led as models because they were readers and thinkers. They thought for others and were never thought for. They were trailblazers and not dolls. Unlike us, they were not led along the way like a dog behind its owner. They were disciplined, ascetic and principled. As for us, we are being technically enslaved because we still hold on to ignorance when it is no longer popular among the living. In a digital age, a Muslim proudly announces his birthday without ever caring to find out about its origin. He floods the social media with the pictures of his kid, wife or parent who is a year older! It never occurs to him to explore the same internet to read

PhD WITH FULL VEIL IN NIGERIA: Tribute to Prof. Odinko

Four days ago, I got an update from facebook to check a new post from Alhaji Sulaiman Oyaremi as usual. I saw a picture of a woman fully covered in hijab including hand glove and face cover being congratulated for her PhD degree. At that time it never occurred to me as something extraordinary. I never knew PhD in Niqob is  unprecedented not even in any of our Muslim established Universities. It was after many more posts started emerging from various sections of the social media that I realised the history that Dr Mrs Kafilat Motunrayo Oyaremi has made. She has done the never-heard in UI and in the entire Universities in the South West. There are yet to confirm insinuations that she is probably the first in the entire 170 Universities in Nigeria. Yes! Umu Abdullahi deserves all our praises and eulogies as a Ummah. She is our heroine and a celebrity. The mother of five has given us more ground to boast and more chances to proof that hijab does not and cannot hinder success of a Muslim la
